Overt Level 1 features make it possible for the public and retailers to authenticate a banknote. Unfortunately, these features are not checked often enough. Machine readable Level 2 features allow retailers and commercial banks to identify counterfeits using automation.

The inherent weakness of Level 2 features is that the automation devices are readily available and serve as an aid to counterfeiters and their reverse engineering efforts.

Central banks rely on Level 3 machine readable security features to protect the integrity of their currency and the stability of their economy. Only central banks have access to Level 3 machine readable security features, which serve as the ultimate arbiter of authenticity. No other feature or combination of features provides this same level of assurance.

Nanoinspekt delivers a Level 3 security solution comprising a machine readable feature and suite of sensors that takes flexibility to the next level. It’s called Jewel™. An innovation based on extensive materials science expertise and high speed sensor engineering, Jewel allows maximum control over the design, choice of substrate, printer selection and processing of banknotes. These four dimensions of flexibility allow central banks to obtain optimum functionality and security at an acceptable cost.

  • Design Flexibility: Jewel has been implemented by four different print application methods on billions of banknotes
  • Choice of Substrate: Both paper and polymer banknotes have been issued with the Jewel feature
  • Printer Selection: The central bank is extended complete control regarding the use of the feature and is able to provide it to any of their printers or substrate providers free from any additional license fees or royalties
  • Processing Flexibility: The Jewel platform includes a wide range of QC equipment and high speed sensors compatible with all major models of note sorters
